Together Alone

At the heart of them, both of them, there was terrible hole that time had not healed, that love could not bridge, and togetherness not ease. From it poured the vastness of space, no matter how surrounded they were, they would always be together alone. It was a disease to them that no one could cure.

They could not give it a name with which they may have conquered it; they could not speak of it without causing further pain to one another. It would always be there between them, just as the stars always twinkle in the night sky, no matter where one stands.
