On The Screen

working away on some database loads, i sit in anticipation of watching boston legal, the spin-off from the practice. this will add to the list of shows i actively watch on tv -- bringing the total up to one.

it also occurred to me that i haven't listed out the movies i've watched for about a month. not as many as usual, but still a few worth noting i think.

How happy is the blameless Vestal's lot!
The world forgetting, by the world forgot
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!
Each pray'r accepted, and each wish resign'd.
-- Alexander Pope

  • taking sides -- a story about the controversial conductor wilhelm furtwangler. was he helping with the nazi war effort or was he helping jewish musicians escape? you decide.
  • zardoz -- classic flick, 'nuf said.
  • dogville -- i was on a run of nicole kidman movies and this one killed it. this movie was definitely for the dogs.
  • snow white: a tale of terror -- a weird remake of the fairy tale, without the sugar coating. it has it's moments, but isn't going to scare or shock you.
  • twisted -- several movies go by this title it seems, but i saw the 2004/I release. definitely worth watching. predictable at times, but leaves enough loose ends to keep some guessing until the end. good rental fodder!
  • man on fire -- this wasn't exactly what i was expecting after reading the dustcover, but i definitely give it a thumbs up.
  • the punisher -- i had no idea this was based on a comic book. the movie itself was ok, but somehow i was expecting a bit more. it's the classice revenge story with little added.
  • soul plane -- i have a difficult time saying the title without mocking soul train. the movie wasn't nearly as witty as the classic airplane, but it was amusing.
  • practical magic -- kidman and bullock. as a guy, need i say more? i didn't think so.
  • mean girls -- i found parts of this movie very funny. dunno, if i were a girl i may have identified with more, but it's a decent movie if you're looking for a laugh.
  • the bone snatcher -- yawn. very, very disappointing. ants? oh, come on.
  • connie and carla -- this movie was much better than i expected. rent it!
  • envy -- "where does the poo go?" clearly, it went into this movie. vaPOOrize is about the most clever thing in the movie.
  • taxi driver -- classic de niro. not as creep as i remember. go figure.
  • nora jones: live in new orleans -- it was interesting to see her perform. she definitely has one of those few voices that my ears could stand to listen to for a long time.
  • eternal sunshine of the spotless mind -- interesting plot and makes good use of jumping time references. kate winslet shows she can look as cute as ever in a variety of hair color (blue, orange, and red) as the rather quirky clementine.

Out of those listed I definitely enjoyed Connie & Carla the best. It was a refreshing movie. Actually having a bit of a plot without the need for gratuitous sex/nudity, blood/violence, or high speed car chases.

Now this doesn't mean I think this movie should be up for an Oscar, but I'd definitely watch it again.
