Edward Teller, who worked on developing the first atomic bomb and played a key role in the U.S. defense and engergy policies for more than half a century passed away yesterday at his home on the Stanford University campus.

He was a member of the Manhattan Project that created the first atomic bomb and later emerged as the foremost champion of the vastly more destructive hydrogen bomb. Teller was also a vocal advocate for creating a second national laboratory -- Lawerence Livermore Labs.
