One Bush Street

on thursday, i read a boingboing article about a fellow named thomas hawk (related to tony hawk???) that was taking pictures in san francisco. in particular he was taking a picture of the building "one bush street" when he was approached by security and told he couldn't do that. [article].

well, the best way to make sure something happens is to forbid people from doing it. so as you can guess it didn't take long for people to organize and run into the city and photograph the building. to photograph people photographing the building. for news crews to film the whole thing. [article]

and of course there are plenty of pictures are up on flickr now. *sigh* first the flip flop flap at the whitehouse and now one bush street. see something in common? *snicker* no, i don't really find them related, but i wanted to sneak in a link to the flip flop issue... i just wish the girls did it on purpose to make a point.

Space Shuttle Verified

i meant to post this a few days ago, but between my normal mishigas, my desire to continue leveling up my WoW character, and a hectic work schedule it just didn't happen. anyway.... coincidently, on the day the space shuttle finally launched, i had to finish up some data and voice wiring for an office we will be occupying and the previous tenant left a lot of wiring that i needed to clean up. i found some decent cat-5 cables that i thought were worth keeping, so i bundled them up neatly and noticed that some had interesting markings on them.

i have done a fair amount of wiring in my day and see a pretty wide variety of cables, but this one was new to me. using google, i got a few hits, but none said what the significance of that "verification" was all about. i first mused that maybe someone borrowed some cable from nasa ames down the road, but one of the things i found via google indicated that the person bought theirs from frys. so much for that becoming an interesting story.

in case others are curious, i have put a picture of the cable up on flickr.

Everything Is Breaking

the brakes on my truck have needed replacing for some time, so today i finally said "f-it" and dropped it off at the shop in the morning to get the brakes done as well as all the other maintenance that i've been less than good about keeping up with. i'll need to put moth balls into my wallet any moment now. what peeved me more; however, is that as i started walking back to the shop this afternoon to go pick it up (it is less than 2 miles there)... it starts to rain. yes, rain. it is july! it doesn't rain in california in the month of july. wtf?!?

they're fixed now, i'm dry again, and i got some good exercise and fresh air walking from/to the shop. and if nothing else, now if my truck goes off the edge of a cliff, we'll known it wasn't because of the brakes. unless the brake lines were cut i suppose.

the dishwasher died the other day... while sweeping up the kitchen floor and pushing the broom under the dishwasher, the boy saw sparks. the teenager that he is thought "cool" and made it happen again. result: dead dishwasher. it didn't always go through the cycles without a little manual intervention, so it just pushed the inevitable purchase up in time.

yesterday i thought for sure my ipod was broken. i lent it to the boy -- yes, the same boy that finds dishwasher's sparking amusing. minutes later he comes back and says the scroll wheel isn't working. hmmmm, it was working last night when i went to bed... i know, because i had to scroll down to find the jack johnson album i wanted to listen to. after getting a bit peeved, i did some googling and found out how to do a reset on a 3G unit (toggle the hold switch back and forth, then hold menu and play/pause down at the same time). thankfully the reset took care of the problem. so much for having to go get a new one... like, oh, say the 60gb iphoto.

so what's next? i shudder to ask that question and probably really don't want to know.
