strangerhood

first there was red .vs. blue where they used halo engine, now the rooster teeth productions crew is making use of sims2 for strangerhood. this could turn out to be amusing.

Link Dump

until i get a linkblog working -- which of course requires me to take the time to create one -- i am going to try and limit my listing of links to once or twice per month. that, of course, keeps them from being as fresh as i might like, but that will just have to be my motivation to bring up a linkblog now won't it? without further ado, i leave you with a quote and lots of links...

We must select the illusion which appeals to our tempermeant, and embrace it with passion, if we want to be happy.
-- Cyril Connolly

in no particular order:

  • bloglines has introduced web services. woo hoo!
  • a client of mine told me about skype which is a free application that provides voice-over-ip -- otherwise known as free internet phone service.
  • mathematician versus the press -- chose your battles. so how many solutions are there to various rubic's cubes? read on. it is also a great example of how the media works -- hear it, believe it, repeat it. way to go john!
  • why is it so?, the ground-breaking tv series with the enigmatic professor julius sumner miller. i wish they had it on dvd.
  • finally, a band with a novel idea. green day is selling printed cd-r disks of all the cds so people can have nice looking backups. heh.
  • joe krauss bumps into bill gates in the bathroom. there was no handshaking.
  • yet more information on the XP SP2 update.
  • if the trailer for white noise is any indication, this might be a good creepy movie to go see. what caught my eye was the link to the aa-evp (american association of electronic voice phenomena). is the site a shill for the movie? i'm thinking not.
  • get your breakup news here. some of those stories where... well, quite humorous. in a sad way of course. and speaking of rejection, for those that get hit on frequently by unwanted peopke, if they ask for your phone number, you can give our your local rejection line number. given the times, maybe they want your email address instead... well, paper napkin to the rescue. it's all primed for the perfect response.
  • oh my... brutally honest personals.
  • the bind that ties: american marriage in crisis. thought provoking article / book reviews.
  • florida hurricanes -- g-d versus bush [gif]
  • fonts: an excellent selection, with previews!
  • some interesting charts showing the of relationship of various people/places/objects. for example the descendants of adam in genesis (not the band, *snicker*)
  • bloglines toolbar for firefox. the notifier works well enough for me, but if you use their other features, this might help.
  • write your own firefox extension, it's not that hard.
  • if you're in the bay area... here is a graphical traffic report.
  • "Rarely is the question asked, is our children learning" and other bush-isms on dvd
  • i'm thinking of purchasing this print from deviant art. or maybe this one.
  • wanna find out where the trojans and virii are hiding on your pc -- read this.

Under The Wire - Delusions

i told myself when dear x came back on-line that i'd do one every month. that wouldn't be so tough would it? well, sometimes the easiest of sounding things are more difficult that we could have imagined. this month we could choose between three words -- delusions, desire, and rage.

Dear X,

In my youth, i planned to live like the fire in the sun, but lately i've found that I can't see through the cloud that surrounds me. Rather than continuing on with flowery prose that could never capture my true thoughts, allow me to share a little verse instead.
Delusions By Pain
Painted pictures are not like the way that you think
By having the answers in my eyes in my mind in my soul
I'm losing control the sky keeps falling on me

Exposing the life that you breath
Reflecting the truth to delusions and dreams
Feeling lighter is about like the heavenly seed
Why is this happening to me

never trusted by my inner feeling it's
better to be dead than to be alive

Sincerely,

AC

it's before 8am and i wake to a gentle tapping on my back. blurry eyed, i roll over to the sound of my laptop's disk whirring and it's screen glowing brightly through the darkened room. "you better read this", she said, handing the system over to me as i sat up. my responses to a meme anchored the background as a comments window floated above it.

i have since removed the comment and only mention it here to remove all doubt should the commenter return and wonder whether it's been seen. it has.

Biggest Of Century, So Far

the news has been all about the 6.0 quake down in parkfield, ca. while it was some 135mi south, the it was felt as far north as sacramento. things clearly shook in the san jose area, but there was no damage. the main concern now is whether this was a precursor for a larger event.

time will tell.

Will Play For Food

with the NHL on strike lockout whatever it is that you want to call it... they aren't playing... fans now have more time to .... well, we have more time to wish there was some hockey. are they doing this because we didn't renew our season tickets this season?!? i mean really, they didn't have to go through all that trouble. a funny article is making it's rounds... enjoy.

Hundreds of Professional Hockey players in our very own nation are going to be locked out, living at well below the seven-figure salary level. And as if that weren't bad enough, they could be deprived of their life- giving pay for several months, possibly longer, as a result of the coming lockout situation.

But you can help!

For only $20,835 a month, about $694.50 a day (that's less than the cost of a large screen projection TV) you can help an NHL player remain economically viable during his time of need. This contribution by no means solves the problem as it barely covers the annual minimum salary, but it's a start, and every little bit will help!

Although $700 may not seem like a lot of money to you, to a hockey player it could mean the difference between spending the lockout golfing in Florida or on a Mediterranean cruise. For you, seven hundred dollars is nothing more than a month's rent, half a mortgage payment, or a month of medical insurance, but to a hockey player, $700 will partially replace his daily salary.

Your commitment of less than $700 a day will enable a player to buy that home entertainment center, trade in the year-old Lexus for a new Ferrari, or enjoy a weekend in Rio.

HOW WILL I KNOW THAT I'M HELPING?

Each month, you will receive a complete financial report on the player you sponsor. Detailed information about his stocks, bonds, 401(k), real estate, and other investment holdings will be mailed to your home. Plus upon signing up for this program, you will receive an unsigned photo of the player lounging during the lockout on a beach somewhere in the Caribbean (for a signed photo. Please include an additional $150). Put the photo on your refrigerator to remind you of other peoples' suffering.

HOW WILL HE KNOW I'M HELPING?

Your NHL player will be told that he has a SPECIAL FRIEND who just wants to help in a time of need. Although the player won't know your name, he will be able to make collect calls to your home via a special operator in case additional funds are needed for unforeseen expenses.

YES, I WANT TO HELP!

I would like to sponsor a locked out NHL player!

y preference is (check below):
[ ] Forward
[ ] Defenseman
[ ] Goaltender
[ ] Entire team (Please call our 900 number to ask for the cost of a specific team - $10 per minute)
[ ] Jaromir Jagr (Higher cost: $32,000 per day)

Please charge the account listed below $694.50 per day for the duration of the lockout. Please send me a picture of the player I have sponsored, along with an Jaromir Jagr 2001 Income Statement and my very own Bob Goodenow (Executive Director of the NHLPA player's Union) pin to wear proudly on my hat (include $80 for hat).

i can take no credit for this amusing parody nor (unfortunately) do i have an attribution. it was a forward of a forward of a forward... i'll update and provide proper credit if i ever find out who came up with this. some players might like to know too.

Ten To Nine

as the sun set drawing close to yom kippur, the stage was set for another type of atonement. a rematch between rival hockey teams in the leagues championship game. in the last meeting, we lost in overtime ending our season the same as it began -- with a loss. all the games in between, however, were victories that gained us the number one seed into the playoffs.

i'll cut to the chase. we won. it was a special victory for a number of reasons. not only did we defeat our rivals in overtime as they had done to us at the end of the season, not only was this our second consecutive championship, but our team was built on the idea of playing hockey for fun. to enjoy the game with the people we enjoy spending that time with.

see, the team is made up of father/son pairs (with the exception of our goalie). the oldest player is in his mid-50's and the youngest is my son at the ripe old age of fourteen. with this season i get to mark off of my todo list something i had been looking forward to for some time -- play a couple seasons of hockey with my son. if i never lace them up again, i have 6 months of memories and two t-shirts that say "champions" on them that we got to earn together. yeah, i'm happy about the win, but to me and i think i can speak for the other dads on this as well -- it wasn't a matter of winning or losing, it was a matter of us doing it together.

Participant or Committed?

mark cuban's ideas on success and motivation that he posted in his web log (with respect to his show the benefactor) struck a cord with me. his no balls, no babies of course stands out, but his "pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered" reminded me of a saying told to me early on when making a career decision. with respect to the new business venture i was told you have to decide early -- when you come to breakfast you have to decide whether you are going to be a chicken or a pig. most people don't get it. it's your commitment level. see, at breakfast, a chicken is merely a participant, supplying the eggs. now the pig... he's committed, giving his very life to make the best breakfast possible. okay, aside from the idea that the pig is now dead and doesn't reap the benefits, it was an interesting analogy.

speaking of small companys and sucess, joe kraus (co-founder of excite) has a blog and is currently sharing his experience for making a business successful. he is currently yammering on about persistence, and he is so right. i need to remind myself far too often that persistence pays.

i was recently reminded of a great puzzle known as petals around the rose and the fun it is getting interesting people thinking about the problem. like the best puzzles, it is so simply once you get it, and with this puzzle getting there is half the fun. the link above will take you to lloyd borrett's page on the puzzle which provides some great background and commentary as well as the images of dice rolls which are quite important in the solving process.

  • the name of the game is petals around the rose, and the name is significant.
  • every answer is zero or an even number
  • the person showing you the game can tell you the answer for every roll of the dice, but no more.
have fun. and no cheating!

Looking Deeper

it is indeed a time for self reflection, and to some degree that explains my silence, but much like in reality, i find myself wondering what to say anymore. and looking back i have to wonder if writing and expressing myself (openly) has done more harm than good. as with most things, time will tell. but will it tell me? and will i listen?

Distractions

incredibly, this is the third time i've tried to make this post. twice before i deleted the tab before posting. am i trying to be told something? yeah, i'm not doing what i need to be doing... my mind just isn't in it. so if i'm going to be distracted, i may as well share some amusing/interesting links i've been saving up.

  • i have never been good at folding. i make a mess really and i'm not sure that this technique will help much. but it's cool and i even managed to do it. well, after watching that video a half-dozen or more times.
  • ecto. i haven't tried it, but it looks like it is a useful tool.
  • yet another flow chart -- to rip or not to rip that is the question.
  • warning geek link ahead -- Devel::Cover is something i definitely have to look at using on some of my code. oh! and i must not forget WWW::BugMeNot.
  • this del.icio.us thing is popping up more frequently. i've never gotten the whole putting dots into words or why it's done, but in this case, it's the domain. that.i.under.stand.
  • fonts are like parfait... everyone likes cool fonts.
  • interesting use of a dvd... colorcalm.
  • getting things done is a book i should probably read. sooner than later even. it'll probably start with -- stop posting stupid stuff on your blog.

now playing: halo -- foo fighters

here kitty kitty ... kitty kitty ...

i'm not what you would call a cat person, but mix in a little math and you'll get my attention. you will also get the infinite cat project. in a nutshell, it is a picture of a cat looking at a cat looking at a cat looking at a cat.... you get the .... ummmm picture. of course being geeky, the cats are looking at the other felines on a monitor. which of course explains why the logo is cool too!

will there be other infinity projects? the infinite dog project? lawn gnomes maybe? how about apple doing one where people are listening to people listening to their iPods? yeah, ok, scrap that one.

so i see a link to a game and follow it. mistake. i spend far too long playing hangaroo, but i finally managed to solve 10 consecutive puzzles. after taking a verbal beating from the noosed up marsupial over a few rounds, whats the reward for finally setting him free. a quick "you're not as dumb as you look" as he does like the pink panther snagglepuss and exits stage left.

i should have hung his ass a few more times... he was much more fun that way.

haribo, the famous makers of gummy bears from my childhood, has intruduced some new wrappers for some of their sweets. a catholic college has complained about the new wrapping, claiming it portrays fruit in sexual positions. for the love of god, don't you people have better things to do? isn't there a class you should be attending like how to cover up the misconduct of rouge priests or something?

Take A Picture, Go To Jail

i don't know this fellow and can't say there wasn't more going on than said in his description; however, just the idea that someone can be arrested while simply being near a protest demonstration and taking pictures is downright scarey! i'm sure the officers were doing their jobs the best they could. this sort of action comes from the top. chief of police? no, higher. mayor? no, higher. governor? higher. you get the point.

i don't want to vote for kerry, i really don't. he doesn't instill confidence in me as a leader that will get this country back on track. but damn it, the prospect of having bush in office for four more years scares the crap out of me. between trying to impose his moral values upon the rest of us and a penchant for taking away constitutional rights... i just don't think i can do it and sleep well at night.

Movies I've Seen Lately

it's time to throw out another batch of movie reviews. i think i've got a pretty good mix this time and i'd bet there is at least one or two you haven't seen. i could be wrong.

  • johnson family vacation
this flick was a weak attempt at matching the humor of national lampoon's vacation with chevy chase and cast. the movie wasn't bad, but it just didn't live up to my expectations. i must confess that i found it terribly funny when the father and son went through each other's cds throwing out those artists who were unacceptable (aka shot). marvin gaye. shot. twice.

  • welcome to mooseport
i had wanted to see this one for a while, but always came across something i'd rather see more. i bit the bullet and was amused. it is about what i was expecting from mr. everyone loves raymond -- a movie you don't have to think about, just sit, watch, and veg-out.

  • taking lives
even without the angelina jolie nude scene, this was a good movie. her character plays an fbi agent sent up to montreal to help the french canadian police catch a serial killer. the movie intertwines the expected and unexpected to keep you on your toes. definitely worth the rental.

  • godsend
in a word -- disappointing. i expected so much more from de nero. the movie had a good premise making use of current concerns on human cloning, but the movie gave in to a predictable plot and oh-so expected ending.

  • the manchurian candidate (1962)
excellent. of course, i knew that before watching. i don't remember watching the entire movie before -- perhaps i was occupied with my solitaire game? oh never mind. anything i say here will give it all away... go see this movie. the original. not the remake.

  • the laws of attraction
your typical romantic-comedy "chick flick" with a plot that was clearly created to meet the ends. two seemingly incompatible people meet and navigate the awkward waters of being attracted to one another yet constantly at odds (due to them being opposing divorce attorneys). a magic castle in ireland throws a wrench into things and the plot does the typical -- take away hope, but in the end provides the "they live happily ever after".

  • The Girl Next Door
i'm not sure i'd put this into the "chick flick" category, but i'm sure it would still garner it's share of "aw, how sweet" from the xx-chromosome crowd. i see the movie being in the risky business mold, but instead of hookers you get porn stars. this flick will never be a classic, but is worth the rental if you were one of the not-so-cool kids in high school.

  • eurotrip
"scotty didn't know, scotty didn't know, ...". here we have a classic movie about a group of recent high school graduates having comical misadventures as they travel through europe. it's set up by having the main character get dumped by his sweetheart right after graduation. his quest now is to catch up with his german pen pal who he has always thought was a guy, but turns out was a gorgeous girl who loved him dearly. they hang with everyone from english hooligans to madame vandersexxx in amsterdam. "hey! this isn't where i parked my car."

  • 9 dead gay guys
there is really only one reason i was even slightly interested in seeing this film: the title. when you see it, the title makes you wonder what the film is going to be all about—besides the obvious, that is. you begin to conjure up images of a dark comedy, one that should be preposterous. it ends up being about a silly quest to see who killed the queen and a search for treasure -- the bread is in the bed. if you want a weird movie with no redeeming quality, this is your movie.

  • 2 brothers and a bride
after josh (david arquette) and his brother jake's (tim blake nelson) mother passes away, they are forced to try and find a bride for josh. jake decides the best course of action is the stereo typical "russian mail order bride" and the two head to st. petersburg for a variety of meet-ups and dates. jake's methodical approach provides a good contrast to his slow but lovely brother. this movie was renamed "a foreign affair" if you decide to try and find this title on dvd or pay-per-view. the movie left me feeling it was incomplete, but all in all it was a cute movie and worth watching.

  • dopamine
i watched this movie just last night and it is still sinking in. that's a good thing! i can safely categorize this as a movie you will end up either really liking or one you'll find completely worthless. the basic idea is that a san francisco programmer/animator (rand) is preoccupied by his creation (koy koy) which can best be described as an aritifically intelligent bird they group has programmed to be a "friend". rand finds himself attracted to sarah, a learning centre teacher, where their software is being tested in the classroom with kids. they each have their issues with relationships and the movie is quite subtle in having them work through them. definitely something you'd expect to see at sundance. it could have used a lot more polish, but not having it did provide it some additional appeal.
